I don’t have a to-read or have-read list. I read kid books and old books and weird books. I don't have a favorite genre. I alternately ignore or consume classics. I sometimes hate other people's favorites, and sometimes quit in the middle. I pick my next read by mood. I read for enjoyment.
I'm a rebellious reader, and I'm glad to hear I'm not alone.
Well said, J.J. Great article. I hate the idea of reading a book because social media told me that I'm supposed to be reading it. Book reading is a very personal thing that occasionally gets shared between friends, because a book is that good, and one human can't wait to tell another human about how awesome it is.
This is specifically why I do not give ratings of books I've read. On my blog I share any content notes readers may want to know about before giving a book to their kids (or parents), what they might like about it, and the blurb. I read kids books, adult books, young adult books but usually not something that's trending. I'm a mood reader so I read what speaks to me in my current mood. Sometimes, that's a picture book. Sometimes, it's a historical fiction. Sometimes it's a space opera. I agree with you. We shouldn't just read books pushed to us by the algorithm or only because people are talking about them. Read what calls to you in the season, or even moment, you're in.

Oh yes. You said it so well. And I won't even bother telling you the titles of the books I'm in the middle of!
